I recently just experienced my first NASCAR race. I have many friends and co-workers that go to the tracks year after year for the thrill of watching the cars zipping around the course, hoping that their favorite racer wins the race. However, for me not only did the fast cars dangerously weaving in and out around each other grasp my attention but it was the amount of waste that was being created that really caught my eye.

Big events like this have a tendency to use a various amount of recyclable items such as plastic cups, plastic utensils, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and the list goes on. Typically all of these items get thrown into the closest garbage bin or left behind for the cleanup crew to do the work for them.

Now you are probably thinking to yourself, “What does this have to do with me?” You’ll especially wonder that if, like myself, you are not a particularly avid NASCAR fan. But after witnessing a race, my mind was opened up to whole new world of opportunities to make a change – particularly by taking what I learned and applying it to a green business.

My closest friend’s brother is about to attend his first year of college. When I think back to the time I began moving my stuff into my fist college dorm, the feelings of nervousness and excitement were extremely overwhelming. Within minutes of parking the car, all of my belongings were hauled up the stairs and put into place. Thinking about this made me realize that when a person is unpacking for the next big chapter in their life, they tend to bring more than actually needed.

With that said, when the new college students are arriving to their chosen institutions, most of their belongings are brought in cardboard boxes, plastic containers, and recyclable bags. However, as first year students are frantically getting their college dorm rooms together and trying to find their way to freshman orientation, they forget to do something very important! RECYCLE! Most of the things students bring to campus are in recyclable materials; however, these items are often being thrown into the garbage bins without a second thought!

By starting your own home business focused on streamlining business waste, you will be able to teach these students and the school itself an important lesson that by not providing accessible recycling options to their students and staff members, they are in fact simply throwing away money! According to Livestrong.com some of the cons of recycling are contamination, high costs of collecting and processing recyclable items, pollutants are being produced from “the fuel burned by trucks collecting recyclables, as well as the energy and water expended during processing”, and finally, “the goods being collected for recycling are not always of the same quality and may not be sorted properly”

However, as there are some cons of recycling, there are many more benefits to recycling that make it a positive aspect in our daily lives. In addition to protecting the environment, recycling can also play a very important and positive role in your life. By starting you own eco-friendly business, you will have the proper tools and skills to guide other businesses, large and small, in to a greener lifestyle and significantly reduce their waste disposal costs.

Let’s face it. Every business would like to enhance their bottom line. Nobody want’s to spend more than they have to on things like water, heat, and electricity. August is a very busy month! As you can see, conserving energy and water throughout the year can save the school thousands of dollars, and you know what that means – more money for vital supplies. When schools save money on things like water and energy, teacher jobs are safer, books are kept current, facilities are kept in shape, and everyone benefits. However, water and energy are not the only ways that schools can cut back. What do teachers and students use every day? Pencils, books, food items, paper, paper, paper, and more paper! All day, schools are rapidly using and throwing away things that can be recycled instead! By recycling the material items that both teachers and students use throughout the year, schools will be able to cut back on waste disposal costs and provide even more of a financial boost that they so desperately need.

Battles of the Waste War: Fight it Your way and Be Your Own Boss

I was recently reading an article on how the army was using a more eco-friendly approach to make them stronger. That’s right, eco-friendly ammo actually makes the military more effective.

For instance, according to IST Energy, the Army has now turned to eco-friendly bullets. Yes, there is such a thing! Defense contractors responsible for supplying our military are now manufacturing “green” ammunition that has a steel core instead of using toxic lead.

In fact, this isn’t even that new of a development. Lead hasn’t been used for quite some time in the production of bullets. As a side effect, the ammo used by the military is far healthier for the soil and the surrounding ecosystem (wherever that may be). So, when the smoke clears – we can be sure that the environment isn’t the one that takes the brunt of the punishment – even if the enemy combatants don’t fare as well. Obviously, while the military can’t afford to worry about Mother Nature at its own expense, according to our source, the eco-ammo also happens to “double the effectiveness of our troops when it comes to penetrating armored targets.” It is a win-win situation, the Army is able to effectively fight in combat AND make less of an impact at the same time (we probably can’t say the same for much else, though).

This just goes to show that more and more businesses are turning to zero waste initiatives to help them win their personal battles in the “waste wars”. However, in most cases, businesses are lacking the time, resources, and knowledge to implement them.
