I recently moved to a city that participates in the Pay-As-You-Throw program. For those of you that are not familiar with this, it is a program were residents are charged to have their municipal solid waste (your typical household trash) collected. The reason for the establishment of this program is to create a direct economic incentive for people to recycle more and to produce less waste.
Today there are more than 7,000 communities participating in the PAYT program and benefiting from it! With less waste being collected, their community increases their revenue. For instance, the town of Concord, N.H has been a participant in the PAYT program since July 26th, 2006. As a result, Concord is saving the city about $528,000 annually and has increased recycling by 75%. What do you think is at the root of these savings? More scrutiny on what is thrown and what is recycled. Residents of the city see a direct correlation between wastefully throwing away trash, and paying to do so.
Not only do cities like Concord, N.H. save money, but they also reduce the size of landfills, which is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions- the chief source of methane, a greenhouse gas that is at least 23 times as powerful as carbon dioxide.
With that said, by creating your own entirely green business, you could be the key source to helping other companies cut back on wasteful habits and help reduce the size of landfills. Truth be told, every business has trash. But it is how they take out their trash that matters. So the next time you see a purple (or other color) trash bag on the side of the road on dump day, think of how you could the owner of your own business and help you community at the same time!
