A little over a year ago, we wrote a post about the “Life of a Plastic Bottle”. In the same spirit, read on to learn about the two paths in life a glass bottle can take, with your help of course.

Recycling glass bottles could be part of a lucrative new business opportunity

1. Glass is created from raw materials: an energy intensive process using sand, lime, and soda is undertaken to provide glass in many shapes, forms, colors, and consistencies.

2. Glass is filled with product: whatever it may be, the glass is filled with what you need or manufactured to be whatever you need it to be. From a food or drink container to a light bulb and everything in between.

3. Glass fulfills its purpose: is the glass now useless? Soon you will decide.

4. A) Glass is thrown away or B) Glass is recycled.

Herein lies the decision. Like a kids book where you choose the ending. Choose A) and the story ends, choose B) and it continues – on and on. Let’s assume you chose B

5. Recycled Glass is broken down and crushed: this process created what those in the industry call “cullet” – crushed glass that is ready to be re-melted.

6. Glass is re-melted: recycled glass is re-melted and ready to be used in whatever product it needs to be.

7. Glass is reused: recycled glass is incorporated into many of the same products it began its journey as.

8. And the story continues…

Everywhere you look, you can see businesses making a difference recycling. You can call them green companies, you can call them environmentally conscious, but when it comes down to it – they’re also saving a boatload of money.

For example, the Seattle based coffee company, Starbucks, has dedicated themselves to finding new ways to use the paper cups they serve their customers – a number estimated to be in the range of 3 billion cups a year. What’s more is that this initiative to recycle their cups is focused on more than just the franchises in towns where recycling is big, but everywhere.

For now, the initiative is limited to Chicago, but the plan is to send the used cups to a facility that will turn them into napkins to be reused in the company’s stores. It’s green and it’s good for the environment, but you can be sure it will also save the company a great deal of money.

This is a perfect example of the demand for recycled products. Many times, a business doesn’t realize they can save large amounts of money by recycling because they either haven’t created the demand for recycled products or they haven’t found it. Clearly, with all the businesses wanting to save money – recycling is a viable option, and all it takes is for someone to point out the opportunities.

Just now, sitting in a coffee shop, I see people throwing glass, plastic, and aluminum drink containers in the trash. They’re throwing things away that are all worth money, and when you think about it these people represent the people we deal with every day. Now, when you consider the drastic amount of 5 and 10 cent recyclables going into the trash everywhere, the amount of money that could be saved begins to seem larger and larger. Just imagine the way businesses waste like this every day.
Grocery stores, restaurants, doctor’s offices, office buildings, and businesses of just about every variety all consist of the same people we see wasting opportunities for savings. All they need is a perspective shift, and they can begin to save money they never knew they were throwing away.

If you’ve been reading for a while or have only had the chance to check out a few posts, you’ll know that when it all comes down to it – when every word on this blog is condensed into a single sentence – it all boils down to this: trash can be valuable.

We come into contact with products that can be recycled every day, and recycling makes a real impact on the world. But more can be done, and you can profit from recycling just by looking at trash a little bit differently.

Take a look around. What do you see that could be recycled, and what do you see that isn’t being recycled that probably won’t be? Now that you’ve taken a second to think about all the little things we waste, think about it on a larger scale. Everyone wastes, especially businesses – and with a green work at home business you can help businesses save where they never knew they were wasting.

Think about it this way…. if you can tell a business “You’re throwing away money every day” Chances are, they’ll want to reclaim it.

Let’s be honest, when we throw away something useful, we rarely think about how we’re wasting. Even still, every reusable and recyclable piece of “trash” is money down the drain, where it could instead be money saved for a business, with a percentage of it in your pocket.

I recently found myself on a trip that involved airports, train stations, coffee shops, and restaurants. While traveling, I observed that recycling almost altogether stopped once I stepped outside the airport. It was actually really difficult to find an opportunity to recycle. Surprising right? aw 4 plastic bottles, a couple crumpled up newspapers, and handfuls of paper. And that was just the top layer!

Now, I understand that if recycling is not made easy for individuals, they aren’t going to think twice about throwing away their daily newspaper or cup of coffee into the plain old trash. This made me think, if the city trashcans aren’t supporting recycling, are the restaurants and other businesses in the surrounding area doing the same? Still wondering about it, I decided to enter a local café for a sandwich and answer my own question.

While sitting down, enjoying the view and my lunch, I realized that I had about 7 things that were recyclable and nowhere to recycle them! Therefore, the paper my delicious sandwich was wrapped in, my paper napkin, plastic fork, plastic knife, plastic spoon (all which came wrapped in my napkin and were unnecessary for me to eat my sandwich) plastic bottle of water, and bag of chips were all sadly going into the trash with all the other recyclable items. Now if I alone had 7 items that could have been recycled, how many more were there in the entire café?

So the next time you walk downtown and see trashcans loaded with debris or maybe when you’re sitting in a café enjoying a meal, think about recycling. Could some of that trash eventually have been recycled into something more? Could that business have saved money and contributed to a cleaner environment? Those are all business opportunities that someone could capitalize on—and many businesses don’t even realize that they could be saving money on their waste disposal by recycling instead.

The Sheer Magnitude of Recycling and Green Business Opportunities

Right now I’m sitting in the multi tiered cafe of a book store. To be honest, I’m people watching more than I am writing, slowly drinking coffee and skimming the news for anything about recycling. So far, I’ve noticed a few things. The young woman sitting in front of me has gotten literally no work done on what seems to be a term paper on “Pride and Prejudice” and the older gentleman sitting below me in the multi tiered cafe hasn’t filled in 5 across: “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and….” (The answer is Tomorrow).

However, the one thing I noticed that you might actually care about is the fact that out of 20 tables, roughly 15 of them have something on them that can be recycled. For instance, there’s the woman beside the man still trying to fill in 5 Across, she’s reading a Yoga magazine, drinking an overpriced bottle of water and eating a sandwich that came out of a plastic container. There’s 2 recyclables, and that’s just 1 table. I won’t go through all of them – not only because you get the point but because I might start getting funny looks.

There you have it. Simply consider the person beside you or the person in front of you and it’s easy to see that we throw away far more than we recycle. We are all waste making machines. Think about it. In order to stay alive our bodies engage in a never ending cycle of “out with the old, in with the new.” So we drink The bottles, crack open the chips, cook up the meat and toss all the junk in the trashcan – leaving plastic, styrofoam, paper, and everything in between to be tossed away and forgotten forever. But that doesn’t have to be.

If you just notice how people throw practically everything away on an individual level, think about how much gets wasted at a business – where tens, hundreds, and even thousands of people work together and collectively produce tons of waste. That can all be changed with a green work at home business opportunity.
