Getting Paid to Recycle!

I recently had lunch with college friend whom I have not seen in the past couple of years. As we caught up on everything that was happening in each other’s lives, along a few laughs over old memories from our college years, he asked me if I had heard anything about this new trend in the recycling world called the “reverse vending machine”. I had not, but I definitely wanted to know more about it!

According to an article ‘Recycling initiatives offer incentives’, the Reverse Vending Machine is a “new type of vending machine that encourages residents to recycle by rewarding them with gifts and vouchers.” Recyclers will take their plastic bottles or aluminum cans to this machine, place it (one at a time) into the receiving aperture, and receive points for the recycled items; these points can then be redeemed at participating stores.

Today, out of a billion beverage containers emptied per year, only 36,000 made it to the recycling bin. The creators of the RVM are hoping that by giving costumers a reward for recycling, they will become more educated on the issue and how to become more responsible for their wasteful actions.

Businesses are always looking for ways to make recycling a more positive aspect in their daily routines but don’t always have the means to do so. Therefore by starting your own entirely green business, you will have the skills and knowledge to help businesses large and small create ways to cut waste disposal costs and make it fun at the same time!

I was recently having a conversation with my a friend about her current job. She is currently in between jobs for the time being and she is now working as a store clerk at a nearby pharmacy. When I asked her how she liked her job, she began to express her frustration towards the fact that they do not recycle. While she was training for her job, her manager was giving her a tour in the backroom and in the corner of the room he pointed to the pile of large cardboard boxes and told her to not even bother asking about recycling them.

Think about it, EVERYTHING that comes through those doors comes in a large cardboard box. From drug shipments and shampoo to the walls of candy that line the far wall of the store. Not recycling all of that cardboard is something that the store should be concerned with, especially if it means that they are tossing away money throughout the course of the year.

Think about all of the stores spread across the country and the hundreds of thousands of cardboard boxes they waste every year. They could instead be saving a lot more than they already are.

Now here is where you come into the picture. By starting your own entirely green home based business, you will have the opportunity to work with businesses large and small in order to create a sufficient and effective waste disposal plan that works for them. When I was looking at my planner, I could not believe that Halloween is fast approaching! It seems like only yesterday we were ringing in 2011, and now it is quickly coming to an end. However, although I am a little upset Halloween has arrived, simply because the year will be coming to a close in a faster speed than I can handle, this particular holiday is still one of my favorites.

I love the smell of the crisp fall night as I walk around countless neighborhoods with my older and her 3 boys. I also love seeing the excitement and thrill on each of the children’s faces when they receive yet another piece of candy.

It is the one night of the year where people, young and old, get to pretend to be something they aren’t. But once the clock strikes midnight, we all turn back into our normal selves and continue our daily schedules. For kids, it simply means that they will be going back to school (hopped up on candy) to learn more about the fascinating world they live in. But for the adults, like you and me, we must go back to our jobs and continue the routine we’ve grown accustomed to every day.

However, if you are reading this and are thinking to yourself, ‘I really could use a career change’ or have been contemplating it for years but haven’t had the time or opportunity to make a change, I have the perfect opportunity for you! Recycling Can Become a Positive Aspect in EVERYONE’S Life!

The other night I had a few of my closest friends over for a small party. Throughout the course of the evening we all caught up with each other’s lives over food and drinks. When the night was coming to an end, one of the couples stayed a little longer to help clean up.

As we were cleaning, I told my friend to put all of the aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, and other recyclable items into the recycling bin. The look that my friend gave me was priceless! Instead of seeing recycling as a positive aspect for the environment and to those in our surrounding community, they saw recycling as something that was forced.

As we continued to talk about this topic, she proceeded to explain to me that she felt this way towards recycling because of the Pay-As-You-Throw program in our community. However, with or without the PAYT program, people should see recycling as a positive routine in their daily lives.

However, it you are like my friend and also view recycling as something that is forced or as an unnecessary inconvenience, I may have a way to make recycling a more positive aspect in your life while potentially making you money at the same time!

I recently just experienced my first NASCAR race. I have many friends and co-workers that go to the tracks year after year for the thrill of watching the cars zipping around the course, hoping that their favorite racer wins the race. However, for me not only did the fast cars dangerously weaving in and out around each other grasp my attention but it was the amount of waste that was being created that really caught my eye.

Big events like this have a tendency to use a various amount of recyclable items such as plastic cups, plastic utensils, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and the list goes on. Typically all of these items get thrown into the closest garbage bin or left behind for the cleanup crew to do the work for them.

Now you are probably thinking to yourself, “What does this have to do with me?” You’ll especially wonder that if, like myself, you are not a particularly avid NASCAR fan. My friend recently just did a half marathon in Portsmouth, NH. As I was cheering her on I was thinking of how I could never have the stamina or motivation to run 13.1 miles, it’s just not something I’m interested in. I understand that when most people run, they get a runner’s high, but for me it is pure torture. However, what I realized as I was taking pictures and cheering on my friend, there is a lot of motivation and dedication involved in running a half marathon or any distance for that matter. My closest friend’s brother is about to attend his first year of college. When I think back to the time I began moving my stuff into my fist college dorm, the feelings of nervousness and excitement were extremely overwhelming. Within minutes of parking the car, all of my belongings were hauled up the stairs and put into place. Thinking about this made me realize that when a person is unpacking for the next big chapter in their life, they tend to bring more than actually needed.

With that said, when the new college students are arriving to their chosen institutions, most of their belongings are brought in cardboard boxes, plastic containers, and recyclable bags. However, as first year students are frantically getting their college dorm rooms together and trying to find their way to freshman orientation, they forget to do something very important! RECYCLE! Most of the things students bring to campus are in recyclable materials; however, these items are often being thrown into the garbage bins without a second thought!

By starting your own home business focused on streamlining business waste, you will be able to teach these students and the school itself an important lesson that by not providing accessible recycling options to their students and staff members, they are in fact simply throwing away money! Fall into Recycling by Starting Your Own Business

For those of you that aren’t good with dates, September 22^nd marks the beginning of fall. For me, this is the start of my favorite time of the year. At this point of the year, people are able to enjoy the beauty of what is around them. First, the trees are punctuated by fall colors slowly bleeding into their leaves, changing from green to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. Later we are able to spend time with family and friends picking apples and drinking cider. In October, we have the opportunity to go on the hunt for the biggest pumpkin in the patch. Finally (and my personal favorite) my home surfing break is completely devoid of tourists.

While I am a huge fan of all of the above, one of my favorite things to do in the fall season is going on long hikes. It is something about the crisp air and the beauty of the surrounding environment that constantly draws me to the mountains year after year. However, sometimes we are not always fortunate enough to take part in these fall festivities because of either prior commitments or our busy work schedules.
