When I first read this quote it made me think of how important recycling in our every day lives. By recycling we are not only preserving the environment, saving energy, or reducing pollution. But recycling is also largely overlooked in the sense that it creates 1.1 million jobs across the United States.

One of those opportunities could be for you, in the form of starting your own green business focused on making a difference with recycling. Defy the Norm

So you go to the store, or the bank, or anywhere else, and it’s just your luck that you get stuck at the very end of a long line. You don’t like it. Nobody does. Nobody likes waiting in line, but it’s not because you don’t like the people, or the store, or the color of the tile. Rather, there’s usually one key reason at the heart of it all. Waiting in a line for too long makes you feel like you’re wasting your time—and nobody enjoys wasting their time.
Either way, it’s easy to know when you’ve wasted your time. You find yourself being forced to catch up, you get stressed, and things don’t go quite as smoothly as you would want them to. However, you realize that and you act. In acting, you go to the store or the bank at a different time to prevent yourself from wasting time. So if we are so opposed to wasting our time, why do businesses so easily waste waste?

Businesses inefficiently deal with their waste because of the way we so often think about waste. As business owners, we don’t feel ourselves throwing away our money because we’re so used to doing it. If it was normal to stand in line for an hour, it wouldn’t be a problem and we wouldn’t feel like we had completely wasted our time.
What it takes is a change of habit, a realization that the trashcan is not the last step for a plastic bottle, a stack of old newspaper, or a pile of scrap metal. Who knew?

Can you point out all the plastic products that you use every day? Our lives are surrounded by plastic to the degree that we often don’t even realize it. The phone we use every day, the food containers we throw away at lunch, the pens we use, the cars we drive in, the computers we work on, and so much more—it’s all plastic! Our world is full of plastic, and we seem to always be tossing it in the garbage can. It has become second-nature, but the truth is that we can do much more with plastic than just throw it away when it’s served its purpose.

Nowadays, with more and more motivation to create recycled products the opportunities are expanding for businesses to stretch their dollar as far as it can possibly go. Instead of simply casting plastic aside as waste, businesses can instead make what we might as well consider a bit of free money. Simply consider the number of uses for recycled plastic. So many business owners are forced to wonder, “How long can this last?” There’s always a certain level of uncertainty when it comes to running a business – that’s just one of the risks we all run. However, as the times continue to change, EWS will continue to train affiliates who can help businesses rise above and succeed.

With EWS affiliates helping businesses save through waste, one resource that is now available is the 7.22 billion dollars that will soon be pumped into EPA programs, which the government predicts will help to create 3 to 4 million jobs—many directly tied to green industries and recycling. The Life of Aluminum

Typically, the life cycle of the aluminum can begins in its purest form—bauxite. It’s then extracted, refined, smelted, and cast into aluminum ingots. In layman’s terms it’s enough to simply say “a lot of digging , melting, and pressing happens.” But no matter how you say it, the fact remains that from digging and mining the bauxite to the machinery used to actually turn it into something usable aluminum, the creation of aluminum we use every day involves using a lot of energy. So it becomes clear that from its basic essence to its existence as a can, the aluminum can is the result of a great deal of energy spent. So why waste it?

Most consumers never truly consider the life cycle of the aluminum can. In the same way, many businesses don’t fully appreciate the life cycle of their aluminum products. By recycling aluminum, businesses help put a serious dent in the amount of mining, smelting, and casting that needs to be done. By cutting out those three steps involved in the creation of new aluminum products businesses would help accomplish two goals.

First, re-melting aluminum instead of mining entirely new virgin materials saves an immense amount of energy, about 95 percent of what would be used to create new aluminum. In fact, some estimates say the energy used to create one aluminum can is capable of powering a TV for four hours. Others say it’s roughly the energy equivalent of a half gallon of gasoline. Using recycled aluminum also reduces the need for new raw materials by 90 percent.

While businesses contribute to their community and economy by recycling, they also accomplish another attractive goal—they save money that they never knew they could. Greening on a large scale

With our new President sworn in and behind the wheel, people across the country are constantly presented with news about the many campaign promises that the President Obama is attempting to make good on. Recently announced measures to help propel the United States to a greener future would invest more than 68 billion dollars in helpingnb America go green.

However, increasing funds to make the country greener does much more than help the environment. It would also help to reduce the energy bills and fuel prices for Americans everywhere. Also, as more money and attention is invested in the greening industry, more jobs are created. But what does this mean for EWS affiliates and clients?

For affiliates, an increasing interest in greening ensures that waste management consulting remains not only a profitable field, but a stable and recession proof field as well. Predictability is a good thing for business

For most businesses, it’s all about supply and demand. However when it came to fuel prices a few months ago, businesses virtually everywhere felt the sting of supply and demand on a larger scale. Now, across the country the factors influencing the price of oil have led to a drop in price that many have waited months to see. At last, businesses have crawled out from under oppressive gas prices to a place where there is just a little more predictability.

According to OPEC, last July a barrel of oil was trading for about $100 each— which threw just about everyone into a financial slump. However, this December relieved the whole country when the price fell to a low of $32, an amount we haven’t seen since 2003. While prices may not be as low now as they were then, they’re still stabilized and they’re still staying low—which is one bit of news that businesses all over are rejoicing about. If this new level of stability shows us anything, it is that predictability is a good thing for businesses.

Predictability is one thing that EWS affiliates can consistently deliver to their clients. While many may think that the impact of waste is insignificant, the money spent on inefficient waste management can be more serious than most businesses realize. Ensuring the price for waste management remains as low as possible allows businesses to do more than just save money. We are consumers

We don’t always think about how much we consume. No. We’re not talking about the breakfast sandwich you ate, or the second serving you took at dinner. We actually consume much much more than we tend to realize. The plastic cups we all throw away, the yogurt containers we drop into the garbage every morning, can after can of soda we toss, and the countless other things we cast aside without a thought all regrettably become our contribution to the environment.

It nearly always takes less energy to make products from recycled materials than it does to make it from new ones. For example, over 95 percent less energy is used when Aluminum cans are made from recycled materials. Through recycling, the materials that we would normally throw away actually allow us to make a considerable difference. You might not see it right away, but it’s definitely there.

When it comes to steel, it takes about 33 percent less energy to recycle it than to make new steel from iron ore. The cost efficiency and reliability of recycled steel has become such an effective cost cutting and greening initiative that two-thirds of new steel is not new at all, it’s the end-result of scrupulous businesses recycling their scrap.

In any case, the relationship between recycling and savings is painfully clear. Why continue making new materials when recycled ones are just as reliable for a much cheaper cost? But that’s not even the best part. As more and more people see the value in recycled materials, more recycled materials will be used—ensuring the EWS Affiliates and their clients always have an outlet for efficient and effective waste management and recycling.

Waste: Tried and True.

Over the years, EWS affiliates have had the opportunity to work with a number of different clients. Not only does that list of clients continue to grow, but the number of different industries we work with grows as well. No matter how much money we help our clients save and no matter what industry they belong to, one thing remains the same—there is money in waste (for both ends of the bargain!).

Take Coca-Cola for example. The company is hardly an obscure business, and you don’t need us to tell you about their exposure across the globe. It isn’t surprising that a business of their size would produce a great deal of waste. However, despite their size EWS affiliates were still capable of finding a way for them to save.

Fast forward just a few years and Coca-Cola continues to see the value in waste. On January 14^th Coca-Cola will unveil their state of the art “bottle-to-bottle” recycling facility in South Carolina. According to the company, in roughly ten years the center will be capable of eliminating the production of approximately 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions—which Is equivalent to removing over 215,000 cars from the road. While the company shows a clear dedication to making a difference by spreading recycling, their goal to recycle 100 percent of the Company’s PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles in the U.S will obviously deliver much more than a message about recycling. On a business end, through their investment in recycling Coca-Cola stands to save immense amounts of money in the long run. Not only does recycling plastic save twice as much energy as burning it but it also drastically cuts down on the amount of new materials needed for production. The combination of both of these factors make the cost-efficiency of recycled plastic a no-brainer, especially when considering that recycled plastic bottles and newly produced plastic bottles are virtually indistinguishable.

Companies that take a significant interest in waste serve as the perfect example that waste is more than just waste. It can be a hurdle, it can be a pain, and it can be a hazard, but it can also be a great opportunity to make a difference and to save. When businesses can’t invest in a 60 million dollar recycling facility, or when they simply want to take the extra step to be more efficient, EWS can help them make the most out of everything they can and make a difference at the same time.

How about a vacation?
