With the economy continuing to lag and an air of uncertainty hovering over many industries, everyone doesn’t quite know what to think. Where are we going? What are we going to do? What’s going to change? How will things be in a few years? Or how will things even be a couple of months from now? The fact is that we can’t always know, and the questions that arise are not always comfortable ones. Either way, as much as we would like to know everything, uncertainty is always something that we will have to deal with. But there is one thing we can be sure about, and that’s trash.

EWS affiliates and their clients need not fear. First, both affiliates and clients can be sure that trash will always be an issue in business. Additionally, with the environment continuing to become a global concern, recycling will also continue to become more and more important. But what does that mean? What can better waste management do for a business?

EWS Affiliates everywhere have experienced success by helping businesses save. However, many times it’s hard to know exactly how businesses stand to do that. By looking at what recycling can actually accomplish, it’s easy to see where businesses can pull ahead by paying just a little more attention to waste.

For instance, think about companies that create a lot of paper waste. More often than not, they don’t realize exactly how far their used paper can go. They typically see it as useless junk that only succeeds in taking up space, so they lump it in with everything else. That’s their first mistake. Eventually, what they end up with is one large dumpster full to the brim with materials deemed useless.

In reality, businesses often fail to step back and consider how useful their waste can actually be. For example, when it comes to paper, businesses don’t realize that recycling a single ton saves up to 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and over 3 cubic yards of landfill space. That’s enough oil to run a car over 1,200 miles and power a home for months.

If a business doesn’t throw away much paper, it’s not hard to find another avenue to save. Consider their aluminum waste. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, our country typically throws away enough aluminum to completely rebuild the entire commercial fleet of airplanes every few months. It’s doubtful that we would actually need to completely rebuild all the commercial airplanes but the sheer amount of aluminum we could recycle puts the possibilities into perspective. In terms of energy, recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for up to 3 hours. However, knowing the facts and putting them into action are two entirely different things. For businesses, the best part is that saving money and making an impact require no more effort than simply meeting with an EWS affiliate. It’s that easy.

While it may be easy to throw away what we so easily cast aside as waste, putting waste into perspective shows businesses how much money they stand to save, and EWS affiliates everywhere are finding that free money is far from hard to sell.

Imagine a world…

Imagine a world where there is no such thing as recycling. Most businesses think nothing of frequently hauling their waste to a landfill, where it’s destined to sit. Without the impact of recycling the landfill is virtually overflowing with business waste that will do nothing but sit there in piles. Save for the occasional thrifty homeowner or businessperson, there are no programs to make use of the waste so that is what it stays—waste. Other businesses make the choice to burn their waste, sending fumes into the air that slowly eat away at the atmosphere and even more just dump it wherever they can.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if this was the approach to waste management we use today? Can you picture the pollution or imagine the cost? Sure, it may not be expensive to dump waste wherever you please, but the long term costs involved would be even greater than the environmental threats that we’re facing today.
