Make Trash Disappear

Guess what today is?  Okay, so beginning a post  like that assumes that there’s a huge event to call attention to, and today’s event might not fall under that criteria, but we think it’s notable either way.  March 24th is the birthday of Harry Houdini – the famous magician and escape artist to ever live.  Interestingly, he was also a vocal skeptic, who fervently exposed frauds claiming that their magic acts were the result of supernatural powers.

We’re not saying that EWS affiliates will escape from a locked dumpster – so don’t ask us to put one in there. But what we will say is that much like the way Houdini was somehow able to escape from even the most unlikely situations, EWS affiliates can earn a great living with a fantastic green business opportunity helping businesses escape from costly waste management that they never knew they didn’t have to deal with.

Trash Trash Everywhere

Recently over at Matadorchange.com they posted a really interesting article centered around photographer Chris Jordan’s work that takes a stark look at American “mass consumption”. The series of photographs are unlike many we’ve ever seen before, instead of the standard mix of foreground, middle ground, and background all we see is an entire photograph filled frame to frame with piles of cell phones, chargers, cars, circuit boards, and other similarly arranged piles of waste.

But Looking through these photos did much more than make us marvel at the capacity we have to somehow arrange our trash in a way that some photographers can find aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, it became even clearer to us that we really do waste a lot. And individuals running their own businesses centered on waste can seriously make an impact by helping others recycle more efficiently.

Taking a look at those photos, imagine the number of businesses that contribute to such waste. If you think you create a great deal of waste in your house every day—consider how much time you spend at work. Every year, businesses (naturally) attempt to cut costs, and every year many of those same businesses produce the same astronomical levels of waste.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Save money and save the environment with better business waste recycling—and become a green business.

Jump on the bandwagon

For example, many grocery stores have started buy-back programs so that their customers can return their shopping bags. With these programs, customers receive money for returning their grocery bags. It’s not a lot of money, but its enough to ensure that the store pays less for new bags and the impact on the environment is also much less.

According to the EPA, a warehouse in Maine was discovered to have stockpiled thousands of “5-gallon or smaller” containers of “solvents, thinners, pesticides, herbicides, and adhesives”. The containers needed to be removed in order to prevent damage from weather, which created the risk of damaging the environment by introducing the harmful chemicals into the environment. Ultimately, the endeavor cost more than $300,000 dollars to clean, with clean-up beginning in the December of 2007 and coming to a close in February.
