Trash Trash Everywhere

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Recently over at Matadorchange.com they posted a really interesting article centered around photographer Chris Jordan’s work that takes a stark look at American “mass consumption”. The series of photographs are unlike many we’ve ever seen before, instead of the standard mix of foreground, middle ground, and background all we see is an entire photograph filled frame to frame with piles of cell phones, chargers, cars, circuit boards, and other similarly arranged piles of waste.

But Looking through these photos did much more than make us marvel at the capacity we have to somehow arrange our trash in a way that some photographers can find aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, it became even clearer to us that we really do waste a lot. And individuals running their own businesses centered on waste can seriously make an impact by helping others recycle more efficiently.

Taking a look at those photos, imagine the number of businesses that contribute to such waste. If you think you create a great deal of waste in your house every day—consider how much time you spend at work. Every year, businesses (naturally) attempt to cut costs, and every year many of those same businesses produce the same astronomical levels of waste.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Save money and save the environment with better business waste recycling—and become a green business.

How much waste do you think your business or workplace produces in a week, a month, or even a year? Like most of us, do you find that you hardly ever think about it, and Would it make a difference if you did?

There’s always a need for recycling…

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The United States Green Building Commission is a recently founded nonprofit community of businesses and local affiliates who are working to make green buildings the norm.  From homes to schools, and everything in between, the USGBC wants to make eco friendly buildings available to everyone in the country.  For example, one manifestation of this new initiative can be seen at Ohio University.  The University recently pledged to undergo all new construction and renovations projects with green building standards constantly in mind.

But what does this mean for businesses?

At Home Business OpportunitiesWith more people, businesses, and organizations committing themselves to “greening” the country, the amount of recycled materials required to make good on our Green promises will need to increase.  Say you’re a manufacturer who primarily works with metal.  Every year you dispose of tons upon tons of scrap. Instead you can recycle it and contribute to building projects that can only make a positive impact.
Or maybe you primarily work in wood.  Wood is yet another material that’s integral in a multitude of projects, and every bit you can recycle makes a difference.  When it comes down to it, just about every industry has something to contribute to greening, and the attitude that one business can’t make a difference is one that is quickly fading away.
They have to get the materials somewhere. So why not lend a hand?  It’s helpful for the environment and it saves you money you would normally spend hauling the materials away.  As greening quickly expands to be integrated in even more aspects of our lives, it ultimately proves that, with Recycling, everybody wins. Is this good news for people looking to start a green home business? We think so.

You Can Recycle WHAT!?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Normally, when we think about recycling, we tend to only think about the basics.  Images of newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, and soda cans all neatly arranged in blue bins are brought into our heads—which is good.  But it’s only a start.  Much more can be recycled than the standard fare of bottles, cans, and paper.

However, some businesses might be left saying to themselves, “I have absolutely nothing to recycle.” And that’s where they’re wrong!  Every year (sometimes even more frequently) there are earth shattering breakthroughs in the recycling industry.  What most businesses don’t realize is that they have much more to recycle than they think.

At Home Business OpportunitiesBeyond recycled newspapers, paper plates, and aluminum cans, there are plenty of materials you wouldn’t normally think to recycle.  There’s paint, leftover manufacturing materials, cast iron, brass, zinc, electronics, and more.  With recycling being a 65 Billion Dollar Industry in the U.S. alone in 2006, it’s rapidly becoming clear that there’s much more to it than just newspapers, bottles, and cans.

For example, 2 out of every 3 pounds of steel made in the United States is comprised entirely of recycled steel scrap.  Additionally, About 60% of the metals produced in the country are all from recycled materials.  You can be sure that all of that metal didn’t come entirely from old soda cans.

If businesses have anything that they simply look at as worthless trash, it might actually be much more valuable than they think.  Businesses can not only find out if they can recycle their “worthless trash”, but they can find the best way to do so, and  they can also find out if they can profit from recycling. All the while they’re helping the environment (So everyone wins!).
