In a recent story on Guardian.co.uk titled “Ethiopia firm recycling tyres into shoes does big business via internet” we learned that recycling really is possible anywhere,  it can be done with much more than you think it can be, and it can even be creative and lucrative.  An entrepreneur in Ethiopia named Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu has taken the initiative to recycle old truck tires and turn them into fashionable footwear to be sold all over the world.   Since starting her  own home business named soleRebels, Bethlehem’s widespread success can be almost entirely attributed to willpower, know how, and you guessed it— recycling.

It can be the difference between throwing your plastic bottle into a blue trash bin instead of a regular one—or it can be as simple as not using that plastic bottle. Either way, sometimes it almost seems like the answers to going green are hiding in plain sight.

At the same time, while its easy to suggest ways for the individual to go green, sometimes it seems a little more difficult to scale those examples to suit the recycling needs of a business—but it’s really not that hard. business recycling and recycling done by individuals are largely the same thing—just a little different.

Okay, Okay. We know what you’re thinking? Is the fall theme going to continue all week? Well the answer to that question, for now, is yes. Fall presents a number of parallels for the business world to smarten up when it comes to recycling. First, we touched on the fact that fall is a season of change, and that businesses can use the many aspects of fall as a reminder that change is good and leads us towards newer, better things. On a deeper level, one of the other themes that go along with fall is the old idea of “the harvest”.

Before being called fall, the season was known as the harvest, when—well—the harvesting took place. So, now you might be wondering what on earth that has to do with recycling, waste management consulting, and green business initiatives. The answer to that question is, “More than you think.” Businesses these days must realize that they truly reap what they sow. Or to use a less confusing cliché—you get out what you put in.

It’s like anything, if you don’t attempt to move towards a positive change, whether it be in the form of saving money, making a profit, or making a difference—you won’t see a positive change. Without putting the work in, there won’t be anything to “harvest” in the end. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, workers at a Sunnyvale recycling plant recently found $3,200 while sorting through items waiting to be recycled at the station. While someone somewhere might not think the story is ironic and just a little funny—at EWS we think it illustrates an excellent point.
When it comes down to it, there really is money in recycling. All it takes is understanding even a few simple ideas surrounding recycling and its special relationship with businesses.
