Across the country communities appear to be recycling more and more. You’ve probably noticed it, driving around you more than likely see specially colored bags and blue containers – signs that residents are recycling. Even if a community doesn’t recycle, you might see them trying to do their part to make more of an impact by making less of an impact. But even if it seems that communities, neighborhoods, and individual households are recycling more – the question remains…. are businesses recycling more?
Many times it seems that businesses aren’t recycling as much as they can be – even though these businesses are the same places where so many individual recyclers work every day. However, it may be the case that these businesses aren’t not recycling because they don’t want to or don’t feel that they need to, but because they don’t know that they can.
All it takes is for a waste stream to change paths and become a recycling stream, and the impact can be astonishing. Just last week I wrote that the wood and paper thrown away every year by Americans is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years. 20 years! All from recycling. That’s more than just saving money – which every business cares about – but it’s also energy saved and yet another step towards helping to save the environment.
So why not recycle like we do in our homes in our businesses? All it takes is educating businesses on the potential of recycling, and before you know it – it’s a green business opportunity in the making.
