The Waste We Make: Recycle Better to Earn More

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Last week, I made a note of everything I threw away while I was at the office.  Why? Because there’s a high likelihood that people don’t realize everything they throw away.  If individuals don’t realize how much they throw away, how can businesses (made up of individuals) possibly realize and act on the amount of trash they throw away “willy nilly”?

Sure, not everything I threw away will have been recyclable and some of it won’t even be significant (maybe all of it put together won’t even seem significant) but put it all together, day after day and imagine how much trash we produce in a lifetime – trash that goes potentially unnoticed.

Keep in mind, in this daily routine I’ve attempted at every point to emulate the daily habits of the average non-recycler.

7:00 AM: Wake up, Shower, Brush Teeth.  Throw away empty tube of toothpaste

8:00 AM: After wandering about the house, zombielike for approximately 45 minutes, pour a cup of coffee, throw away coffee grounds, filter, 4 empty sugar packets (Lay off!), and empty plastic bottle of creamer. Buttered some toast and headed to the office.

8:30 AM: Begin writing blogs and scouring the web for news on the recycling front.  Print article on recycling efforts in California. Read article. Take notes. Throw article away.

9:00 AM: Finish second cup of coffee, throw away styrofoam cup, continue working.

12:00 PM: After 3 solid hours of work, it’s lunch time. After lunch, the trashcan finds itself a little heavier with one plastic sandwich bag, an empty cup of yogurt, plastic spoon, plastic knife, plastic fork, plastic bottle of water, bag of chips, and a granola bar wrapper.

1:30 PM: Print out 5 page report.  Find mistake that slipped through the first draft, throw away old report, print out updated report.

3:00 PM: It’s the 3:00 wall, 1 more cup of coffee consumed, 1 more cup and 4 sugar packets to join it in the trashcan.

6:00 PM: Home now and it’s dinnertime! After all is said and done, the trashcan gets heavier with 4 paper towels, an empty carton of milk, leftover bits of chicken, empty bag of mixed greens, empty can of corn, packaging from chicken, and an empty spice bottle.

9:00 PM: A beer or two and a movie with the family.  Trashcan, meet beer bottle and popcorn bag, they’re very excited to make your acquaintance.

11:00 PM: Goodnight world!

Check back next week and I’ll put it all into perspective! Hopefully, it will help some see how much money goes into waste and how much green business initiatives can save.

Remember the Alamo!: Recycling Against the Odds

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
Remember the Alamo? Sometimes it's good to be outnumbered. For EWS Affiliates, there's always plenty of waste to recycle.

Remember the Alamo? Sometimes it's good to be outnumbered. For EWS Affiliates, there's always plenty of waste to recycle.

Do you remember the Alamo from History Class? The Battle of the Alamo was a key turning point in the Texas Revolution, where Mexican Troops launched an attack on the Alamo Mission in present day San Antonio Texas. In the battle, all but two of the Texan defenders were killed and the assumed cruelty of the Mexican general inspired many Texan settlers and United States citizens to join the Texan Army to help fight and defeat the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto 2 months later to end the revolution.

As you may know, the Battle of the Alamo is what has helped make “Davy Crockett” and “James Bowie” heroes in American folklore, and the entire event at the Alamo has come to represent fighting against the odds. Now, we won’t go so far as to compare EWS affiliates to soldiers at the Alamo, but – when it comes to fighting against the odds, recycling is a constant battle.

Consider for a second the sheer amount of waste that gets hauled away from businesses every week to be dumped in a landfill and forgotten forever. For EWS affiliates, that is an unnecessary waste that, if stopped, can benefit businesses and affiliates immensely in the long run.

Now, consider the astronomical amount of business waste that is still hauled away every week and compare that to the growing number of EWS affiliates across the country. We’re proud that we continue to encourage more and more aspiring business owners to work as EWS affiliates with our fantastic green business opportunity, but the numbers don’t even compare.

However – here’s where our little story differs from the Alamo. Our affiliates love the fact that they’re seemingly outnumbered by business waste. There’s always an opportunity, always a chance to make a dent, and always another opportunity to make a difference. The business waste is there for the taking, and EWS affiliates know that where there’s waste—there’s a great opportunity for business.

Hey, It’s Fat Tuesday! After all that Excess, how about some Recycling?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

In many denominations of Christianity, the period coming before Easter known as lent is a time of fasting, repentance, and moderation. Lent typically begins on Ash Wednesday and continues for 4 weeks until Easter Sunday. Well, before that begins we all know what comes first – Mardi Gras. Part of Carnival, the period of celebration before the Lenten fasting and abstinence, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” and – as we all know – is known across the world as a celebration of excess.

However, from the drinking, parades, and beads that have made it so popular to the little known traditions that get overshadowed by the raging party, Mardi Gras really does have something for everyone, and it’s many little facets help illustrate what we do at EWS perfectly.

After the excess of Mardi-Gras, its easy to see how much we can recycle.

After the excess of Mardi-Gras, its easy to see how much we can recycle.

It’s not surprising that a holiday known as “Fat Tuesday” is known to be a celebration of excess, and we can only imagine what kind of recycling can be done after the party. But when it comes to excess, EWS affiliates are the experts. No – not because we’re party animals, but because we see excess every day in the form of uncontrolled business waste, and find a way to turn it into a fantastic business opportunity.

There’s a reason why there’s a holiday to celebrate the bit of excess that comes before the fasting of a religious season, because too much of a good thing isn’t always good (that’s why it’s called excess!). Sure, having a good business means you may be producing more waste, but too much business waste means it’s harder to stay on top of, and when it’s harder to stay on top of it tends to catch up to you faster. That’s where the EWS business opportunity comes in. EWS affiliates are here to help make sure that businesses don’t get caught up in excess waste, and save in the process.

Just like a celebration such as Mardi Gras can remind you what “excess” really is. EWS affiliates reveal to businesses the impact that excess waste has on their company in the form of money they never knew they were losing.

Every Little Bit Helps

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Chances are that somewhere near you, there is a can of soda.  Maybe it’s on your desk, in your refrigerator, in the trash can (or better yet, the recycling bin!), or even in your hand.  Chances also are that you’ve probably noticed the writing on just about every can and bottle, reading “ME-HI-OR 5¢ CA CRV”.  You know what it means, but if you’re in one of those areas do you take advantage of it?

At Home Business OpportunitiesOnly a fraction of the people who use bottles and cans actually collect them and bring them to collection centers, that means that there’s only a fraction of people who actively profit from recycling.  Why not start?  Most businesses say things like, “It’s too hard” or “We don’t have the time to sort, collect, and haul everything away”. But with just a little bit of scrutiny and planning, businesses can actually profit from recycling—and they can do it with much more than bottles and cans.

For example, imagine you manufacture thousands of products out of metal.  Maybe you’re in the fabrication business, going through tons of steel every month.  But you don’t use all of it do you?  There’s always a little left over scrap sitting around that you may not be able to use. In actuality, scrap doesn’t have to be scrap, and waste doesn’t have to be wasted.  Just like there’s people profiting from bags full of bottles and cans every day, you can get the most of your money out of your “waste” by finding the people who can use it.

Why wait when there’s someone who will do it for you, for free.  Help the environment, contribute with a green business and make a little extra money—it all adds up.

It couldn’t be easier

They say that people are becoming more and more connected than ever. At the same time, with all of the technology at our hands that we can take advantage of, professionals are becoming even better at simply getting things done. With even children knowing how to multitask with the best of them, maybe the combination of motivation and technology is one reason why EWS has continued to expand.

EWS has continued to grow exponentially over the years and we can’t exactly put a finger on why. It could be technology stretching affiliates’ reach to more clients or simple determination driving deals home. But no matter what’s pushing EWS affiliates along, one thing remains the same: There are always independent and goal oriented would-be entrepreneurs who are looking for a great opportunity.

At Home Business Opportunities

Sure, maybe the ability to stay connected and remain productive through technology is a strength that a number of potential affiliates have. But no matter how much technology and potential someone has supporting them, they hardly tend to equate opportunity with trash. As hundreds of EWS affiliates across the country have realized, our love for the ability to stay connected and in touch as well as our ability to multitask has made making money from trash more than a distinct possibility, but an everyday reality. What’s even better is the fact that the skills we find ourselves so accustomed to allow EWS affiliates to make a positive difference. Every day, not only do EWS affiliates help clients save money, but they find themselves helping them go green as well.

Piles and piles of waste

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Often you’ll be driving down the road, through a neighborhood, or into your own driveway and you’ll see waste. Maybe you see a broken down car, a pile of scrap destined for the dump, or a pile of building materials. They’re all different kinds of materials, but they all have one thing in common—they’re being wasted, and the one thing EWS affiliates know best is that it’s always a mistake to let waste go to waste.

At Home Business Opportunities

What bothers us so much about all of these things, like old rusty cars and piles of waste, is more than the simple fact that they look bad. One explanation could be that wasted waste bothers us so much because it’s a reminder that the things we so often see as trash were once useful and may still be—it’s a shame to see them cast aside and thrown out, because they can be so much more. EWS affiliates simply point out that what we so easily call trash can continue to be useful and profitable. Affiliates serve as a reminder that waste is something we create but it’s also something we can prevent.

We’re not saying that businesses will stop creating waste, but there’s a big difference between creating waste and preventing it. Preventing waste is preventing loss. Businesses lose when the waste they do create doesn’t go as far as it can. By preventing waste, EWS affiliates allow businesses to take charge and ensure that everything is as useful, profitable, and cost-efficient as possible.

We Handle Savings all day…

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Every day, we handle the products of someone saving. Have you ever been to a cookout where you used a paper plate? More than likely, that plate was recycled. In the same way, you’ve probably had a bottle of water. Once again, the bottle you drank from was probably a recycled one. More and more, companies are using recycled materials to manufacture the products we buy and use every single day.

At Home Business OpportunitiesWhile companies rely more and more on recycled materials, it’s become clear that recycling is not only important—it’s profitable. With more companies using more recycled materials, it makes sense that increased recycling will lead to increased opportunities.

That’s where EWS can help. We train our affiliates to know all about waste management— everything from the costs and the risks, to the opportunities to save vast amounts of money. By scrutinizing waste streams, EWS affiliates can earn big by simply introducing businesses to the true potential of efficient waste management and recycling. Over the years we’ve learned that saving is easy, you just have to know how. With EWS, it’s as easy as looking at trash a bit differently.

Clients in the past have been shocked to learn how much money businesses waste every year on inefficient waste management. They’ve seen that money that could have been spent on their business had instead been thrown into the trash and whisked away to the dump. For EWS affiliates, waste is much more than trash; more often than not, waste presents on opportunity—an opportunity that EWS affiliates are trained to cash in on for their clients.

And the best part?

It’s free.
